Bluebird Classic

Mountain Bluebirds are back!

The bright blue feathers flashing against the snow covered sagebrush; nothing else signals that it time to ride… The reality (i.e., cold headwind on the way home), however, is that putting in those early season miles in Jackson Hole can be tough to motivate for unless you get some folks to suffer a little with ya. Hence the Mountain Bluebird group ride. With a good 15+ year run, the "Bluebird Classic" has become a welcomed event to spring riding as we look forward to summer. We might even raise a little money for JHWF's bluebird conservation efforts. Bring a buddy to help ensure you get home all right. Or, make a friend or two by bringing extra snacks to share. We generally “end” at Pearl Street Bagels, in Wilson.

The Mountain Bluebird Classic has brought riders together for over 15 years to kick off the cycling season with shared miles and a shared purpose—supporting the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation’s (JHWF) Mountain Bluebird Nestbox and Color Banding Project.

Why It Matters:

  • Since 2003, JHWF has maintained a 6.1-mile bluebird trail along the National Elk Refuge, consisting of 110 nestboxes.

  • In 2024, volunteers monitored these boxes and documented 98 Mountain Bluebird eggs laid, with a 79.6% fledging success rate.

  • Our color-banding initiative, launched in 2017, continues to yield valuable data on breeding site fidelity, survivorship, and dispersal.
